General info about wikis

What are wikis?  What are they good for?  You're on a wiki now, but does that help you understand them?

If not, try looking up 'wiki' on the biggest wiki of them all, Wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page.

Or, for an introduction to wikis in plain English, watch this video from the Common Craft Show (www.commoncraft.com/show).

For a list of teaching ideas, try this page:  Teaching with Blogs and Wikis

Here are a few examples of wikis for adult learners and educators.

Minneapolis Northside ABE Program's wiki:  http://northsideabe.pbwiki.com/.

Barry Bakin's class wiki:  http://mrbakinsesl.pbwiki.com/

and Barry Bakin's collaborative student wiki that involves the work of students from a class in Vermont connecting with his class in CA:  http://coasttocoast.pbwiki.com/

The Adult Learning Web Resources wiki is a site for learners to get connected with online resources.  This wiki was started in the U.K. and has links to some great BBC online learning content.

Here is another ESL teacher's wiki site for sharing with colleagues:  http://andrestrategies.pbworks.com/

And of course, there is the wiki about adult ed wikis created by the folks at OTAN (Outreach and Technical Assitance Network for Adult Educators):

Wikis in Education (Broadly)

The 21st Century Learning Wiki is dedicated to fostering discussion among educators about the role of new technologies and new literacies in education.  Well worth a read!

The Thinking Machine is a teacher's wiki, dedicated to technology integration as well.
